JUST FOR YOU (yes, YOU), here's some fun and/or free stuff going on here in Utah this weekend:
ALL THE FRUIT
It's starting to be Pick Your Own Produce weather.
My kids have never forgotten that one time, er, two years ago, that I took them to an apple orchard and let them pick their own apples.
(I meant to go again last year but Smiths was way closer. "LOOK KIDS, YOU CAN HAVE YOUR OWN PLASTIC BAG. ISN'T THIS FUN?")
(But we're DEFINITELY going to go this year.)
(I mean, I HAVE REALLY GOOD INTENTIONS.)
That link up there leads to a list of farms and orchards where you can pick your own produce. It takes you to the Utah list, but you can navigate around on their site to access farms and orchards in other states. They also have a list of farmer's markets around the country.
(Yes, this is a picture of a banana.) (Shut up. Non-copyrighted Utah fruit stand / orchard related photos are hard to come by.)
EVEN MORE PRODUCE RELATED FUN (WHEE!)
If you JUST. CAN'T. GET. ENOUGH. vegetables, you can always drive up to Utah's famous (I HEAR IT'S FAMOUS) (EVEN THOUGH I'VE NEVER HEARD OF IT BEFORE) Fruit Way, a stretch of Highway 89 from Willard to Brigham City that is apparently lined with fruit and vegetable stands. LINED with them. DON'T EVEN TRY TO SEE THE SIDEWALK, YOU WILL FAIL.
(They MIGHT'VE used a bit of hyperbole there, I'm thinking.)
UTAH LAKE FESTIVAL
June 2nd, 10AM to 2PM, Free
There'll be free hot dogs and popcorn, music, free fishing, kids activities and crafts, free t-shirts, sailboat regatta, hay rides (I am not sure of the relevance here, just go with it), water equipment rentals (jet skis, etc), etc.
We went to this a couple of years ago. It was fun but there were a LOT LOT LOT of vendors. And heat. And then some more vendors. Info here.
After a while it got so crowded that we left the actual festival and - harassed a bunch of nearby ducks.
But it was still fun, and free, and HEY, we still use the free t-shirts they gave us as nightgowns. WIN WIN.
EAGLE MOUNTAIN DEMOLITION DERBY
(part of their Pony Express Days events), June 1st, 5PM, $5 for kids, $8 for adults
No, we don't live anywhere near Eagle Mountain. Yes, we're TOTALLY going. My 7 year old will be in freaking HEAVEN, are you kidding me? Info here.
OTHER EAGLE MOUNTAIN PONY EXPRESS DAYS EVENTS:
June 1 - 3, price varies
On Saturday they're having a parade (10AM), dutch oven cookoff (9AM, Nolan Park), and HELICOPTER RIDES (10 - 4, Ranches Academy, $25 per person).
Oh, and, they're also having a very traditional old-timey summertime event - a Zumbathon for charity.
(I love it.)
Upside down info here.
SPANISH TRAILS RENDEZVOUS
June 1 - 3, Spanish Fork Fair Grounds, $1
This is - um - some kind of a Mountain Man event? Or something? I am confused but intrigued by the descriptions of some of the activities, which include a"frying pan toss" (if your marriage is on shaky ground you might want to skip this one), "knife and hawk competitions" (?), and "flint knapping demonstrations" (??!).
Yeah. I have no idea what that means either.
But there WILL be a candy cannon, and I think we can all get on board with that. Info here.
ANTELOPE ISLAND STATE PARK GUIDED HIKES AND JR. RANGER ACTIVITIES
June 2nd and 3rd, $9 per vehicle to get into the state park, but it's free for the hikes and program
Try the 3.5 mile Beacon Knob Full Moon Hike guided by the park naturalist on Saturday at 7:30 PM on the White Rock Bay Campground trailhead, or try a shorter Exploring Island Resources hike with a park ranger on Sunday at 2PM. Alternatively, your kids can participate in the History of Antelope Island Bison Jr. Ranger program - 10 AM.
We went a couple of years ago and had fun hiking around, but we never saw a buffalo, mostly just coyotes. And gnats.
Lots and lots and LOTS of gnats. Info here.
June 1st at 4:00, $5 for kids, $10 for adults
Want to impress your sulky teen? Maybe try out the Street Legal car racing series at Rocky Mountain Raceways. Info here.
