Gloria the Undead Snowman

Pin It My kids and I frolicked in the snow yesterday. I felt like such a good mom, because we were doing good mom type of stuff. Painting on the snow with water and food coloring! Building a snowman! So then I felt justified in completely mentally phasing out for the rest of the afternoon. I have this internal thing - 1 hour of good mom time should buy me 3 hours of mental vacation. Does that sound about right to you?

And then my son had a nightmare last night, and so I got to cuddle him for a while. This sounds horrible, but I love it when my kids have a bad dream, because that's something I can DO SOMETHING about, dang it. I may not cook or sew, but I can chase away monsters and give hugs with the best of 'em, gosh dang it. Comfort given, CHECK! Good mom points received, CHECK! So, a productive day AND night.

Anyway, here's a little movie where you can check out our snowman snowperson.

(note - I took down the video because it was making the post continually republish to Bloglines and driving people nutty...)

Oh - and on the contest - I'll announce the winners tonight. Or tomorrow. Or - eventually. Ish.

  1. Are you not the same person who emailed me this morning and told me that you were short on humor today? I beg to differ. This is GREAT!

  2. See, but I made it YESTERDAY. All I had to do today was hit post. :>

  3. That was so dang funny! It snowed here this weekend too - alas, the rain has melted it all away. :(

  4. That was so cute and kid-funny. That whole snowman thing - real or not - that stumped him, didn't it? No wonder that little guy had bad dreams. I wonder what he thinks that magical hat could do for him?
Thanks for sharing that sweet video. It is, in fact, TOO cold here to make snow critters - the snow won't stick together. Drat.

  5. Ok, stop talking about your good mom things. You're making me feel so guilty.

  6. Food coloring! What a good idea. If it ever gets warm enough to go outside without immediate risk of frostbite we will try that! I've always wanted a pink and green snow-person:)

  7. I'm so proud of you for braving the snow. And yes, I think the ratio of mommy time/personal time should always be 1 to 3.

  8. I'm the exact same way about my mental math and loving when my kids are freaked out.

    We rock.

  9. I'm totally with you on the time-table of mommy time and mental vacation time!

  10. The cuteness factor is off the scales here. Especially your little boy and his missing jacket.

I do the same mental calculations, btw...10 minutes for you, 1 hour for me. My kids still don't get it, though.

  13. Yes, 1 hour of good mom time definitely translates to 3 hours of mental vacation.

  14. hahahaha! I like your 1:3 ratio. You are a great mom.

  15. Hey - I do that good mom:bad mom ratio thing, also.

Did I forget to enter the contest? Darn it!

  16. I love the "me or the snowman?"...

oh and you sound like one of those mom's who never yells.....

I would be like "I SAID to go get your jacket!....but of course I would never act like that on video! HAHAHAHAHAHA

  18. Go, Carter! Anything built with so much love can't be completely dead!
When your snow has melted, you can bring the kids here. I have a yard that needs snowmen.

  19. You are a fun mom. I've never painted snow before. Looks like great fun!

What is it with little boys and no coats? Mine does the same. I really don't know why they aren't sick more often.

  20. So cute! It must be hard to have one kid wanting magical snowmen, and one kid freaking out about it. I would be torn about what route to go with...

  21. At our house, it goes something like this;
"Go put your coat on, your mother thinks it's cold"
Why am I the only one that recognizes that freezing temperatures outside can be very uncomfortable, and can cause that runny stuff to start pouring out of their noses?
They can have blue lips and be shaking uncontrollably, and still say "MMMOOOMMM, It's not that cold, REALLY!
I'm so impressed with your 'snow painting' My kids would love doing that! At least I don't need to worry about them getting their coats stained with colored water. They probably won't be wearing them.
Loved the video, your kids are DARLING!

  22. I love playing in the snow. The little clip was really cute. I never could figure out why the snowman never came to life for me either. It's one of the great mysteries of life :o)

  23. How cool are you? Painting on snow - whodathunk it. Not me, because I live in Mississippi. My son has never seen snow. He's six. Yeah. Sad, no?

Also, I am with you on the ratio of mom time to me time. Sounds just about right.

  24. We did the same thing on Saturday. Except I wasn't as creative as you. Painting the snow--my kids would've LOVED that.

  25. My favorite part is where you're talking about the magical snowmen who come to life and then you see your daughter's face and start with the verbal gymnastic to unfreak-her-out.

  26. I am such a horrible example when it comes to coats. If I'm just going on post quick, I think "I'll only be outside for a few seconds. I don't need a coat." I guess when the Little Mister gets older I'll have to lead by example...

  27. ha. love the video. classic.

  28. "You seem like one of those moms that never yells..."

Brooke - Ha! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Me and my kids just got a big laugh out of that. Whew!

  29. I think one hour of good mom time equals 5 hours of mental vacation time. So clearly you are a much better mother than I am.

  30. Gloria is beautiful! There's no snow where we live so I am a little bit jealous. And also jealous because my kids don't seem to need those comfort cuddles anymore.

  31. You are the BEST mom! I loved the video and sorry to hear you are sick.
