HOW IT WAS THAT MY SON CAME TO BE WEARING UNDERWEAR AND NOT A PULL-UP AT THE GROCERY STORE THIS MORNING, CAUSING AN “INCIDENT”

Sarah, five minutes before she is supposed to be out the door.

“Why don’t you wear this shirt, Sarah?”

Sarah: (rolls eyes)

“It’s cute.”

“I just wore it.”

“On the first day of school. Two weeks ago.”

“Moooooom.” (The tone here is clearly, Mom, you are SO LAME.)

“How about this then, you haven’t worn this?”

“Mom. That shirt is for babies.”

She is six.

Abby, ten minutes before pre-school:

Abby: “I don’t want those! Pants are ugly! Princesses don’t wear pants.” Throws herself on the floor, sobbing.

Me: “How about this skirt, with this shirt?”

Abby: “I don’t want a shirt!”

Me: “You have to wear a shirt.”

Abby: (weeps)

Carter, two minutes before taking Abby to preschool:

Me: “Let’s put on this pull-up.”

Carter: “I not wear pull-up, I a big boy.”

Me: “You have to go to the store with Dad, so you need to wear this pull-up.”

Carter: “I NOT A BABY, I A BIG BOY. I NOT WEAR A PULL-UP MOMMY.”

Carter: “I A BIG BOY.”

Me: -- - - - - - -

Me: “Whatever…. Uh, honey - he's ready to go!”

Um...... Sorry honey.

Are other children like this, or is it just mine?

  1. Most of them are like that. Try having Megan and Emma pick out what they are going to wear to school the night before. A good idea in theory - sometimes it actually works! As for the toilet training - Good Luck:)

  2. Oh, I remember those days. There was the day that TYO stepson was about 6 and decided that he absolutely was going nowhere without his favorite shorts and purple t-shirt. The shorts were ripped completely through the crotch seam.

I think that was the same day that NYO stepdaughter decided she was 'pithed off' and wasn't going to take it anymore. While my back was turned (taking care of Shortman who was probably 3 months old at the time) NYO decided to walk home - about 2 miles away. I never knew that legs that short could move that fast.

  3. Okay. So I totally WISH that was my problem. My son REFUSES to wear anything other than a diaper and wants to be a baby forever. He's never going to be potty trained. (pardon the comment by a random blogger - just found your blog today)

  4. What a fun morning for you! I think all kids go through those moments, but it is not fun when all of them are having a moment at the same time. :)
How did Jake do at the store?

  5. JJ, I LIVE for comments - I'm a comment whore, actually. Thanks for stopping by ;>

We've tried for months on the potty training thing, and he wanted no part of it. Suddenly, last week, he was all about the underwear. Go figure.

Jess, he peed himself. That's why I apologized to my husband. Eeek.

  6. I hope every kid is like this because I know mine are! Maybe not on the clothes thing, but the undies thing is all Kyle.
I was changing him from one pair of peed in undies to a pair of dry ones a couple weeks ago. I sat him on the counter with a bare butt for 2 seconds while I grabbed the clean ones, and when I picked him back up there was a dolup of POO on the counter. he can't go on the potty, but the counter, sure!

  7. To those of you in the throws of potty training - some tips from a grandma.

I found that when my kids were really ready to potty trained, they did it in about a week. I always went cold turkey - no pull-ups (didn't have them way back then) or night time diapers. This generally means they have to be off bottles and waking up consistently with a dry diaper. They be around 3 (especially boys) when this happens, but I've never had a kid go to preschool in diapers. Plus, I didn't have too many night time bed wetting problems.

I even toilet trained my nephew while I was taking care of him for 10 days. At that time, I had two of my own in diapers. I couldn't handle another. Especially one that was 3 1/2.

Yes, I'm patting myself on the back. I was a toilet training marvel. No, I WON'T take on the any of your kids. Sorry:)

I remember clearly that some of mine were, especially the girls! We won't mention names here. Oh, it is so fun to see my children raising children!

  10. Man, those stubborn genes in our family run deep.

Yesterday before going out to run some errands, I realized that Jules and I were inadvertantly matching- we both had pinkish shirts on. So, I decided to change her shirt to avoid those "oh, how cute, you match!" comments because I am SO not one of those moms, and when I went to take it off of her she wouldn't let me. She held it down and fought me all the way. I gave up and decided I'd change my shirt. Ten minutes later, what happened? She was tired of her shirt and wanted to take it off. ARGH.

Take comfort in the fact that maybe it's not all kids, but it IS all of our kids.
